Candidate blog: The Next Chapter of Universities of Applied Sciences Is Being Written Now

I started my studies at a university of applied sciences in 2023. As a fourth-year student of production engineering and economics, I have had the opportunity to experience student life from many different perspectives. At the same time, I have come to realize how significant a role universities of applied sciences play in Finland, and how little this significance is sometimes discussed. Universities of applied sciences are often discussed in relation to universities. The conversation easily turns to which is more prestigious, which produces more research, or how a UAS degree compares to a university degree. I believe we need to move beyond this framework. A university of applied sciences is not a halfway point between a university and something else. It is one half of the Finnish higher education system, with its own mission and strengths. Right now is a good time to ask what that mission should be in the future.

In Finland, there is a great deal of discussion about economic growth, productivity, skills shortages and competitiveness. Ultimately, all of these discussions come down to the same thing: people and their skills. Universities of applied sciences educate nurses, engineers, business graduates, social services professionals, cultural sector professionals and countless other experts who work in companies, municipalities, wellbeing services counties, organizations and as entrepreneurs across Finland. However, the importance of UAS education does not end with a degree certificate. During their studies, students work on projects, complete internships and theses, solve real-life problems in working life, and build cooperation with companies and other stakeholders in their regions. We need to become better at putting this into words. A university of applied sciences does not merely prepare students for working life; it is already an integral part of working life and the development of society. In my view, this is one of the greatest strengths of UAS education.

I do not think we should have to use our resources proving that universities of applied sciences are valuable. Instead, we should talk more about what universities of applied sciences can be at their best. The university of applied sciences of the future is a place where students receive high-quality, tuition-free education and the skills needed for a changing working life; where research, development and innovation activities have a concrete impact on the everyday lives of regions and companies; and where international students are seen as future professionals and experts. It must also be a place where people can develop their skills throughout their careers. The importance of Master’s-level UAS education and other forms of continuous learning will grow as working life changes ever more rapidly.

Amidst all of this, we must not forget the student. Future higher education policy cannot be made solely from the perspective of civil servants, politicians, higher education leadership or employers. The student voice must also be heard. This is where SAMOK has an important role to play. SAMOK must be a bold advocate that does not merely react to what happens in higher education policy, but also actively opens discussions about what kind of UAS education and higher education student experience Finland will need in the future. At the same time, we must ensure that student unions have a genuine opportunity to be part of this discussion. National advocacy cannot be done over the heads of student unions; it must be built on their experiences and perspectives.

I have personally gained much more from my university of applied sciences than an opportunity to earn a degree. I have gained skills, friendships, experiences and opportunities to make a difference that I would not have found elsewhere. That is why I want to help build a future for universities of applied sciences where their significance is recognized and where students can genuinely be proud of their education.

The next chapter of universities of applied sciences is being written now. The question is not whether we will be part of writing it. The question is whether we dare to write it ourselves.
