Blog: Student, remember to use your vote!

Student, remember to use your vote!

Early voting for the regional and municipal elections has already ended, and the actual voting day is Sunday, April 13. If you haven’t voted yet, now is the time to act – because your vote matters.

Mental health and well-being are built on small but significant things. A comfortable environment, functional recreation areas and opportunities for hobbies create the framework for each of us to cope. When light rail routes are in good condition, public spaces are inviting and exercise opportunities are accessible, we contribute to a balanced everyday life, where everyone, regardless of their income, has the opportunity to add excitement to their lives. These opportunities do not arise by themselves, but through decisions that either support or weaken the everyday life of students.

When talking about well-being, it is important to also talk about a sense of security – monthly uncertainty about the level of income does not increase anyone’s well-being; even when that income would ultimately be sufficient. It is not just about money, and therefore how decision-makers approach affordable services, public transport and student housing is of enormous importance. A student who can afford to move, live and do activities safely can focus on their studies without constant financial worries.

Access to mental health services must not be tied to long waiting times or overly complicated systems. Smooth service pathways for students, effective cooperation between the Finnish Social Insurance Institution (FSHS) and welfare areas, and the implementation of the therapy guarantee in practice can be decisive factors when help is needed quickly and reliably.

The future belongs to all of us – including students. Choose decision-makers who have a positive and constructive vision of the future. Not voting means letting others decide for you. So use your voice, because every vote counts. On Sunday it’s your turn to influence your own future!
