Helena Maijanen
Helena Maijanen is the candidate for the 2026 SAMOK Board Chair.
Helena is from the Tampere University of Applied Sciences student union TAMKO, and has served this year as vice chair of the Tamko board.
Why are you running for the SAMOK’s Board?
I’ve had a passion for advocacy and politics for a long time. I want to be part of creating positive change in student politics, especially in this time when students’ livelihood and well-being are increasingly under threat. I enjoy working with people and challenging myself.
Responsibilities are also divided among the presidency in different ways depending on the year. What issues would you be particularly interested in in the Bureau’s area of responsibility?
I’m mostly interested in political advocacy and leadership. In leadership, I want to ensure that everyone can succeed in their work and discover their strengths. My cross-sectoral expertise provides a strong foundation for this.
What kind of networks do you have and what kind of networker are you?
My Karelian roots have given me a natural ability to connect and engage with people easily. I have broad networks nationally and especially in the Tampere region, where I’ve built strong connections through working groups and various teams. I’m skilled at utilizing and expanding my networks.
What kind of political lobbying experience do you have? For example, experience in lobbying.
I’ve lobbied decision-makers and politicians on current student-related issues. At Tamko, I’ve had discussions with policymakers about student politics. I’m also part of several working groups both within and outside my university, where I can influence decision-making in various ways.
What kind of leadership experience do you have and what kind of leader do you aspire to be?
As Vice Chairperson of Tamko, Chairperson of Opiskelijan Tampere, and a project manager in my studies, I’ve learned to work in diverse teams. As a leader, I get to know my team and identify their strengths. I’ve developed adaptability and gained broad knowledge of finance and financial management.
Tell us why you should be elected to the SAMOK Board.
I approach matters boldly and through opportunities, even when they feel intimidating, and I examine them from multiple perspectives. My passion for advocacy drives me forward — toward the Chairperson role at SAMOK.
What else would you like to tell us?
I’m Helena, Vice Chairperson of Tamko this year, and I’m running for Chairperson of SAMOK! I tackle even difficult issues with courage and am a curious networker. I bring courage, adaptability, and a forward-looking perspective to SAMOK. I want to bring SAMOK closer to both studerande and student unions, and raise the visibility and voice of UAS education.
