Equality in higher education institutions

Equality in Higher Education Institutions online course & Equality model for higher education institutions

The Equality in Higher Education Institutions online course was created as part of the Equality to Higher Education Institutions project of the National Union of Students in Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences SAMOK, carried out in 2021-2023. The aim of the project has been both to promote equality work in higher education institutions and to give students tools and competence to carry out equality work in student activities.

The course has been published in Finnish, Swedish and English. The course is intended for and open to all members of the higher education community. It has therefore been designed so that both higher education staff and students can make use of it in their activities. The course consists of several sections that include, among other things, concepts related to equality, research findings on the equality challenges experienced by higher education students, information on factors affecting equality and on equality legislation, as well as guidelines for equality planning and for implementing anti-harassment liaison officer activities. The course aims to develop the thinking of members of the higher education community on equality themes and to bring the topic closer to everyday life. We therefore hope that the starting point and intrinsic value of completing the course is to develop one's own thinking and actions to be more equal.

The goal is that, after completing the course, a member of the higher education community better understands the different factors that affect the realisation of equality in the higher education community and how equality planning should be carried out. After completing the course, participants have a broad understanding of the areas for development in equality planning at their own higher education institution and/or student community, as well as the ability to promote equality in the community through their own actions. They master the principles of anti-harassment liaison officer activities and have insight into how to develop these activities in their own community.

The course consists of nine sections and takes an estimated 14-16 hours to complete.

Produced as part of the project Equality model for higher education institutions available here. The model is intended for use by the entire higher education community: it is meant to serve as a guideline so that higher education institutions can adopt permanent practices to promote equality.

We are collecting feedback on how the materials are going to be used in the higher education community and how, for example, the online course could be developed. You can access the feedback form via this link. We hope that the project materials are useful to you, and we are happy to provide more information on how they can be used, as well as on equality work in higher education institutions.

Thank you for promoting equality in higher education communities!
