Could I become a Board Member of SAMOK?
Anyone interested in advocating for university of applied sciences students and advancing their position can get involved in SAMOK’s work! This is possible at the General Assembly held every year. At the meeting, SAMOK elects its Board, whose task is to implement the union’s strategy and action plan together with the staff.
The Board’s term of office begins each year on 1 January and ends on 31 December, and its work takes place primarily at the union’s office in Helsinki.
What will you get to do in a national advocacy organisation?

- You will certainly learn new things about advocacy and organisational work and can deepen what you have learned before.
- You will gain an extensive professional network and useful working life skills.
- You get to gain experience of international cooperation and advocacy.
- You get to do advocacy work in an amazing work community and you will have your own staff partner to support you!
Board candidate handbook
My year at SAMOK was fun, busy, sometimes stressful, always educational and full of adventures! You can also get a great deal out of SAMOK: networks, experiences, skills and, of course, friends. I recommend applying to SAMOK to anyone who wants to learn about civic engagement, grow their networks, and learn leadership, teamwork and advocacy. My time at SAMOK had a significant impact on the direction of my career, and today I am glad that I once said yes to student activities!

Applying to SAMOK was the result of long deliberation for me, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I have made.
In particular, I got to deepen my political skills and develop as a speaker and as an expert. Admittedly, I was sometimes dead tired, but even so, the year on the Board gave me faith in my own abilities and helped me land my current job. In the end, the best part is the friends I made on the Board, with whom I can still joke around and chew over how society is going.

The SAMOK year was enormously interesting and developed my skills every day, but of course it was sometimes tough as well – fortunately, I got support from the staff, the rest of the Board and fellow organisation colleagues at Lapinrinne. The double election spring in particular offered many opportunities to learn about and experience higher education policy, lobbying and running campaigns. Without SAMOK, I would not be in my current career.
