The annual representative council elections of the student unions of universities of applied sciences were held at the turn of October and November. Nationwide, voter turnout was 11.59 per cent. Last year, voter turnout was 14.44 per cent. A total of 3,985 votes were cast. In seven student unions, elections did not need to be held as the representative council was formed without a vote.
The highest voter turnout was recorded in VAMOK, the Student Union of Vaasa University of Applied Sciences, where turnout reached 27.27 per cent. The next highest turnouts were seen in SAMMAKKO, the Student Union of Satakunta University of Applied Sciences, at 18.07 per cent, and O’Diako, the Student Union of Diaconia University of Applied Sciences, at 14.88 per cent.
Among individual candidates nationwide, Jasmin Tuominen from Helga, the Student Union of Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences, gathered the most votes with 58 votes. The second highest number of votes, 54 votes each, went to both Minea Larikka from SAMO – the Student Union of Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences, and Camilla Hiltunen from Tamko, the Student Union of Tampere University of Applied Sciences. Nationally, sector-specific candidate lists generally achieved the best results in the elections.
In these elections, higher education students choose their representatives to the student unions’ Council of Representatives, which decides on the student unions’ operations and finances and appoints the Executive Board to implement those decisions. The Councils also define the student unions’ policy positions and exercise the highest decision-making power within the student movement. All members of the student unions are eligible to stand and entitled to vote.
You can find the official results on each student union’s own website. We’ve listed the student unions’ contact details at: www.samok.fi/opiskelijakunnat.
